Maimane reflects on DA coalitions over the last two years

It has been two years since the last local government elections, with a changing metro environment in some of the country's biggest cities.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has been governing Johannesburg, Tshwane and Nelson Mandela Bay in this period.

DA leader Mmusi Maimane joined Charlotte Kilbane on the Midday Report for an update.

He says the agenda of local government has, by and large, been achieved.

One of the key lessons we take away from the coalition is that you have got to focus on the government agenda, the delivery of basic services, ensuring we pass budgets, making sure budgets are pro-poor. It is hard but you have got to negotiate and keep going back to the table.

Mmusi Maimane, DA leader

Commenting on this year's tensions in Nelson Mandela Bay as well as the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) attempts to remove Athol Trollip as mayor, Maimane says the focus should remain on residents.

Keep coalitions about the people, if they become about racial polarisation they are simply not workable.
