[LISTEN] Do women belong in engineering? SAICE CEO seems confused

Do women belong in engineering?

CEO of South African Institution of Civil Engineering Manglin Pillay seems to be flip-flopping around the issue.

According to SAICE the article, which was published in the July edition of Civil Engineering magazine, contained an innuendo that girl-children are less in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

I did not say in any of my writing or discussions that women should not be joining STEM, neither did I say women are not smart enough to join engineering.

Manglin Pillay, CEO of South African Institution of Civil Engineering

The issue really is around male chauvinism, patriarchy and so on. I'm saying, yes, those things exist in the workplace but they are not the only reason women are disempowered.

I had an email from a woman saying she is working 320 hours because she is a woman in an executive position. I am a CEO and I work on average 300-400 hours a month. We need to have a deeper discussion as opposed to saying I work 320 because I am a woman. It is intense for all genders.
