As I write this, I’ve just arrived home from our African team’s fourth appearance in the Tour de France. It has been another grand adventure at the grandest race of them all.

While it hasn’t quite hit the heights of our previous three Tours, I have again been overwhelmed and filled with immense pride at how South Africans have taken this team to heart and have celebrated it as their own. From the South African flags waved by fans on the road to Alpe d’Huez and on the Champs Elysees, to the thousands of messages of support – this team has a dream and it is an honour to have so many of you come along for to journey.

The Telkom 947 Cycle Challenge is a special race to me and to Team Dimension Data. Reinard Janse van Rensburg, who was on the Tour de France team this year, won it in 2012. Stefan de Bod, won of our talented young South Africans in our feeder team, took first in 2015. I have ridden it as a professional and as an amateur, and have watched it grown from a few thousand people into the massive celebration of South African cycling it is today.

Good luck with your training. Enjoy having the roads of Johannesburg all to yourselves! Be safe and well.

Regards

Doug.
