Mduduzi Manana's inclusion at the event raised eyebrows as he is a convicted woman-beater.

An event, meant to raise funds for Lion Mama‚ an Eastern Cape woman who admitted to stabbing her daughter's alleged rapists‚ killing one of them and injuring two others, received a backlash after the organisers invited former deputy minister of education and convicted women basher, Mduduzi Manana.

The criticism is around the fact that a convicted women basher will be part of an event against gender-based violence.

But organiser Buhle Tonise says Manana is not invited as a speaker but to be part of the panel where discussions around gender-based violence will be held.

She says members of the public will have a chance to ask Manana difficult questions in order to understand the mind of an abuser.

Mduduzi Manana is not invited to make a presentation. Unfortunately it appears that way, but he is invited as a convicted person.

Umama was consulted and all the others victims and they raised some concerns but they said that they wanted to understand some things from Manana.

Manana was informed that if the public wants to attack him we won't be able to stop that and we cannot be able to suffocate people opinions. If he is going to be uncomfortable with the questions that people are going to ask him, then he must not be part of the panel.

The event is scheduled for Saturday 11 August and tickets range between R1‚000 and R5‚000‚ with the proceeds going towards Lion Mama, to complete building her house.
