Paarl school lambasted for letting off masses of balloons at event

Sport magazine Editor, Sean Falconer, took to Facebook to point out the environmental havoc that rubber balloons can cause after hundreds of balloons were released into the air for the celebration of Paarl interschools, an annual clash between Paarl Gimnasium and Paarl Boys’ High.

Falconer says it is interesting that no one among the organising team discouraged the release of balloons into the air and actually saw it as a wonderful idea.

We cannot ignore the plastic litter problems in this country and the rest of the world.

Sean Falconer, Sport magazine Editor

People think oh so harmless a balloon, but that balloon eventually pops or deflate and it comes back to the ground and could be swallowed by animals.

Sean Falconer, Sport magazine Editor

Falconer says he has written to the school and body corporate to educate them about the dangers of releasing balloons into the air.
