Chaos at University of Venda amid free education protest

Students have brought the University of Venda (Univen) in Thohoyandou, Limpopo, to a standstill in their fight for free education.

The university has had no lectures for more than a week after students took to the streets, fighting what they called 'failure by the department to offer free education' at higher institutions.

SRC president at University Of Venda Gcina Mhlabana says the first issue is that of students not receiving their allowances since February.

The cause of the problem comes from the system that the university is using to disperse our money to students which were brought in to check if it would work.

Gcina Mhlabana, SRC president at University Of Venda

But the problem is that now our students have not received their allowances from February. They are supposed to go to class, they are supposed to write assignments, write tests without food and books.

Gcina Mhlabana, SRC president at University Of Venda

He says the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) have put their application processes on hold but that is not their main issue right now.

Our cry is for students who have been approved for funding for 2018 who have never received their allowances.

Gcina Mhlabana, SRC president at University Of Venda

Now we are getting information that NSFAS is claiming to have paid 10 314 students but then my question is that our students who are affected are 8 000 students and we don't have 10 000 students who are using NSFAS.
