Chiropractor Dr Kevin Lentin explains how pressure is exerted on your muscles as well as the joints of your spine, hips, knees and other parts of your body.

[It's because of] the increased pressure at the disk space, which is the little shock absorber that sits between each vertebra, they have done studies to indicate which positions increase the amount of pressure on that disk. Laying is the best, that is where there is the least amount of pressure. When you sit the pressure doubles, when you stand it is improved significantly.

Wear and tear comes about as a result of additional pressure and strain and excessive movement on these joints.

Lentin warns against sitting at the edge of your chair.

You cannot say one thing is going to work perfectly for everyone, we need to look at each individual case but then the big issue is using the chair properly and using the back rest of the chair effectively.
