Ramaphosa's land policy shows more parallels between SA and Zim - Adriaan Basson

President Cyril Ramaphosa's shock land policy announcement last week has SA looking a bit more like the next Zimbabwe, says News24 editor Adriaan Basson.

Basson wrote an opinion piece explaining why it has now become more difficult for him to defend SA in comparisons with the neighbouring country.

Is SA the next Zim? This is what Basson had to say:

It's slightly more difficult to answer that question after last week Tuesday evening at around 10:30pm when President Ramaphosa addressed the nation in front of ANC flags and announced that the ruling party would change the Constitution.

Adriaan Basson, editor-in-chief of News24

Ramaphosa is in a very difficult position. I don't envy him. He's got an election to win next year and he's still running the Zuma administration.

Adriaan Basson, editor-in-chief of News24

It's an open secret that Ramaphosa didn't want this. He didn't want the Constitutional change.

Adriaan Basson, editor-in-chief of News24

If he's willing to go to these extremes by short-circuiting a democratic process that is still ongoing, is he really in control of the ANC and this specific public debate.

Adriaan Basson, editor-in-chief of News24

My biggest concern is that Ramaphosa has sold out to populists in his party that are much more interested in power than in doing the right thing.

Adriaan Basson, editor-in-chief of News24

I am concerned about Ramaphosa's lack of action when land grabs happen as we saw again this weekend in Stellenbosch.

Adriaan Basson, editor-in-chief of News24

How will he stop this and change the momentum and hope of thousands for a piece of land?

Adriaan Basson, editor-in-chief of News24

Take a listen to his opinion:
