How to ace a job interview (and when to talk about money)

Job interview (pexels.com, 2018)

Often you don’t win it in an interview, but you can lose it in an interview… You need to know why you are there.

It’s a delicate conversation [talking about the salary]… you can ask what they are thinking of paying… but certainly, don’t make the entire conversation about what you’ll get… the real time is once you’ve won…

Job interviews remain one of the most useful devices to select suitable employees.

Before conducting an interview, the employer will typically evaluate many prospective employees’ résumés after which she or he then selects a small number of candidates for interviews.

Candidates may also use the interview to assess the demands of the job and the culture of the employer.

Employers usually conduct multiple rounds of job interviews.

It is increasingly common to conduct an initial interview via the telephone or Skype.

The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield interviewed Andrew Woodburn (Managing Director at Amrop Woodburn Mann) for his weekly “The Science Of” feature.

Amrop Woodburn Mann’s dos and don’ts of job interviews:

  • Do your homework on the prospective employer.

  • Do have at least three or four questions that you can ask the interviewer.

  • Do adhere to a formal dress code.

  • Do give a valid, strong reason for leaving your current employer such as personal development, attraction to the company’s culture or the need to relocate due to family pressures/requirements.

  • Don’t lie. Ever.

  • Do not over inflate your CV.

  • Do not be late.

  • Do not be overly familiar.

  • Do not speak poorly of your current employer, no matter how disaffected you may feel.

Make sure you meet the requirements. Don’t waste your interviewer’s time… Have your ducks in a row… your character is not going to win it for you…

It’s a life-skill that you’re going to have to win at if you want to progress in your career.

Waffle, mumbo-jumbo or long, extended answers show an inability to be concise and clear. And in many cases you shoot yourself in the foot… Answer the questions you are asked…

Put your smartphone against the wall and film yourself.

Overconfidence is often a failing of youth… develop self-awareness of how you’re behaving in the interview. Practice makes perfect!

Don’t try and game them [psychometric assessments].
