10 arrested for public violence during a protest over wine farm evictions

10 people have been arrested for public violence during a protest over the eviction of a group of people who illegally built shacks on a wine farm in Stellenbosch.

The illegal occupation of Watergang, a portion of land belonging to Louiesenhof Wines, began last week amid the municipality's ongoing negotiations with the owners for its purchase.

Stellenbosch Municipal Manager Geraldine Mettler says they have had a very fruitful meeting with the police and with the members of the community - including those who were arrested.

We just concluded on that meeting now and there was an agreement reached. We will meet again with the community leaders on Monday, the Sheriff was also present at that meeting.

Geraldine Mettler, Stellenbosch Municipal Manager
