[LISTEN] Why are there unknown deductions on Sassa pensions?
The South Africa Social Security Agency (Sassa) has stressed once again that that the only direct deduction permitted from a social grant is for funeral policy premiums.
A 702 listener, Elsina, recently alerted Azania to a series of unexplained deductions on her account after attempting to withdraw nearly full R1640 from a number of retailers.
Head of Communications at Sassa (South African Social Security Agency) Paseka Letsatsi says the law allows for only 10% of the adult grant to be deducted if a pensioner has opted into a funeral policy.
In terms of our arrangement with the retailers, all beneficiaries are supposed to get their money in full. This new card can only allow for a deduction of 10% for a funeral policy.Paseka Letsatsi, Sassa's Head of Communications
The beneficiary themselves have to sign for the funeral policy and agree. A beneficiary cannot just wake up and find that R60 has been deducted. That is illegal.Paseka Letsatsi, Sassa's Head of Communications
