'Jiba and Mrwebi have until Friday to motivate why they should not be suspended'

Deputy National Director of Public Prosecutions Nomgcobo Jiba and Special Director of Public Prosecution Lawrence Mrwebi have until Friday to argue why they should not be suspended.

Former President Jacob Zuma appealed a High Court order in 2017, which compelled him to institute disciplinary inquiries against the pair but President Cyril Ramaphosa has now withdrawn the appeal.

The two advocates returned to work last month after a High Court order, which struck them from the roll of advocates was set aside by the Supreme Court of Appeal.

Jiba has been able to navigate herself through these kind of spaces before. I think the difficulty in this articular situation is that there is an order which was obtained by Freedom Under Law in December last year which effectively compels the president to insinuate that inquiry and to suspend.

I would understand that unless he wants to be held in contempt of court, he is going to have to suspend her. Why he has chosen to hear her reasons is interesting...
