'Unions will accept Eskom's wage offer as long as members are not charged'

Eskom has confirmed that the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the National Union of Metalworkers (Numsa) have, in principle, accepted the utility's revised wage offer but will not sign the deal.

The parties met on Wednesday to resolve the long standing dispute.

In the agreement workers are expected to receive 7.5% wage increases in 2018, a further 7% wage hike for the next two years and a R10 000 once off payment.

NUM and NUMSA are however at loggerheads with the Eskom over its decision to charge its members for unlawful strike action.

Eskom spokesperson Khulu Phasiwe says the power utility will not concede to the demand.

They [the unions] have accepted in principle the offer that has been put on the table, they have not signed the offer but they have said to us they do accept the offer.

Khulu Phasiwe, Eskom spokesperson

They are saying we are not going to sign this until you make a commitment that you are not going to take disciplinary action against our members who have embarked on industrial action.

Khulu Phasiwe, Eskom spokesperson

Eskom has refused to accede to their demands and therefore they have requested to meet with the minister of public enterprises and the Eskom board.
