Rhodes students invited to appear before parly hearings on gender violence

The Police Portfolio Committee wants to hear from Rhodes University student leaders later this month at its parliamentary hearings on gender violence.

A delegation of students has been invited to appear before the committee following the death of Khensani Maseko.

Maseko took her own life last week after she was raped in May.

Eyewitness News reporter Babalo Ndenze has more on the story.

The chairperson is saying that Khensani's death is a wake up call to the country to deal with this institutional inertia, he calls it, and a lack of action by the relevant authorities which is the police in this case.

They have not decided exactly who from Rhodes will be attending but it is on the 28th and 29th of August. It is an annual hearing on the Domestic Violence Act, to hear from organisations that represent women and individuals.
