NSFAS's Nxasana resigns amids payment system strain

The embattled National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has been dealt yet another blow as it's CEO today announced his resignation.

This comes just weeks after Education Minister Naledi Pandor asked NSFAS to pause all student applications for 2019 due to a backlog in the allocation of student funding for 2017/18.

Nxasana served as chairperson for three years and his time at the helm has been plagued by allegations of corruption and maladministration.

Speaking to John Maytham CEO at Universities SA Ahmed Bawa says they are sad that Nxasana has decided to resign as chair of the board.

Because he was really a substantial figure but also he was a really good interface between NSFAS and the universities.

Having said that the big challenge is not so much the fact that he was not able to change NSFAS, but that NSFAS as a structure is simply not suitable for the kind of delivery of financial aid especially the new kind of bursary system.
