[LISTEN] Psychologist says that depressed kids need to act out their problems

In the parenting feature, educational psychologist, Claire Maher chats to #WeekendBreakfast host Phemelo Motene about depression in kids.

Maher says that there's this perception that childhood depression is different from adult depression.

She adds that in actual fact, a lot of the symptoms of depression experienced by adults, can be seen in kids.

Maher says that depressed kids are increasingly sensitive to rejection or criticism from their peers.

Insomnia, outbursts, and aggression are all signs of depression she adds.

Maher says that in adults, a lot of the time, the main symptom of depression is sadness.

She adds that in kids, you find that their anger tends to be a symptom of a greater feeling of sadness.

We can talk through our difficulty as adults but children play.

Maher says that children can act out their feelings in various ways.

She adds that play therapy involves a psychologist present, as well as toys and drawings so kids can act out their problems.
