Gauteng Department of Water and Sanitation says the pump stations at Vaal River have been neglected for a long time.

The sewage spill at the Vaal River has reached crisis proportions.

The district is facing disaster as pollution and raw sewage from the Emfuleni water waste works continues to spill into the river.

The situation is getting worse by the day.

Maureen Stewart, Vice Chairperson of Save the Vaal Environment

We have raw sewage flowing into the Vaal River from different sources. This dirty water has gone some 22km down to Parys.

Maureen Stewart, Vice Chairperson of Save the Vaal Environment

The evidence of the pollution can be seen from thousands of fish dying, it's a very sad situation.

Stewart says the Emfuleni Municipality is responsible for the treatment of water and that council does not have money to do its job.

That council simply has no money and the situation has been getting worse, that at times they have not had money to pour petrol into their vehicles to send out maintenance teams.

Maureen Stewart, Vice Chairperson of Save the Vaal Environment

Meanwhile, Gauteng Regional head for the Department of Water and Sanitation Sibusiso Mthembu says the infrastructure is not coping.

There are a number of pump stations in that whole scheme that needs major refurbishment and these pump stations have bee neglected for a while.
