The psychology of being unemployed

The African National Congress (ANC) has called on the mining sector to find alternative ways to avoid job cuts and they say this is a matter of urgency as mining companies announce planned job cuts.

There have also been claims of the South African government plans to let go of 30 000 workers over a three year period in order to reduce costs though the Public Service and Administration Department are refuting these claims and Eskom has also been in the firing line over proposed retrenchments..

The issue of unemployment in South Africa, the threat of retrenchments in a stagnant economy is one that so many people are living with.

Performance coach Gielie Hoffmann spoke to Azania Mosaka about the psychology of being unemployed.

He says the big underlying challenge is the uncertainty.

Having no clear way forward and knowing what will be next for you. And that can be weeks and that can be months.
