[LISTEN] 'Six years on...Surely there can be no closure if no-one is punished?'

Commemoration services will be held in Marikana today [Thursday] to remember the miners killed 6 years ago while protesting for a minimum living wage.

702 Breakfast Show host Bongani Bingwa shared his thoughts on the commemorations.

Let me tell you who won’t be there. The families of the ten people who were killed because they had refused to participate in the strike. The families of the men who took their right NOT to strike seriously and carried on working despite threats to the lives. The families of the four miners, two police officers, and two security guards, some of whom had their tongues pulled out, others hacked with pangas and burned in their cars, some died from multiple stab and gunshot wounds, still in their uniforms.

The families they were providing for are not invited today. Life will carry on for them on this day as it has for the last six years. Because even in 2012 on this day their men were already in the morgue. And for those deaths, the president can’t be blamed.

So when something like this happens we want to someone to be held to account. Surely there can be no closure if no-one is punished?
