New Zealand has given retailers six months to phase out single-use plastic bag or face fines of up to NZ$100,000.

Retailers in New Zealand have been given six months to stop handing out plastic bags to customers or face fines of up to NZ$100,000.

Associate Environment Minister in New Zealand, Eugenie Sage says there is a strong public support to phase out single-use plastic bags.

She says some of the big retailers have already stopped, but some are lagging behind. Read: Demand for paper straws is growing rapidly in SA
