South Africa has a commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which includes ending poverty in all its forms (SDG 1).

Ending hunger and achieving food security and improved nutrition (SDG 2), and ensuring sustainable consumption and production patterns including the aim to “halve per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer level, and reducing food losses along production and supply chains by 2030” (SDG 12).

It is inconceivable that about a third of the food produced in South Africa goes to waste every year.

Speaking to Azania Mosaka, co-ordinator at WWF South Africa Tatjana Von Bormann says the sell-by date and the use by dates are indeed one of the causes unnecessary food waste.

Much of the legislation is in place to protect us the consumer and these food health scares can be terrifying as you know.

Tatjana Von Bormann, Co-Ordinator at WWF South Africa
