[LISTEN] Codeine addiction and abuse
In the health feature, Member of the South African Society Of Psychiatrists Dr Eugene Allers chats about the causes behind addiction to over the counter medication.
Dr Allers says that there are many patients who get their 'stash' of codeine from pharmacies because they are addicted to it.
He adds that codeine has been on the market for many years.
If you take codeine, it converts into morphine which some people get addicted to.
It's a wonderful pain tablet and it suppresses coughs... It's got medical uses but it's high addictive.

Like cocaine, you start craving that good feeling. What ends up happening is that you build tolerance which results in you wanting more and more of it.
