State Capture Inquiry

Zondo Commission of Inquiry kicks off with former statesmen as key witnesses

The much anticipated Zondo Commission of Inquiry into State Capture is due to get underway on Monday in Park Town, Johannesburg.

Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo is expected to call a raft of witnesses including former deputy finance minister Mcebisi Jonas, former GCIS CEO Themba Maseko and veteran ANC MP Vytjie Mentor.

EWN reporter Thando Kubheka says both Mentor and Jonas have alleged that they were offered senior positions in government by members of the Gupta family but they declined.

She says they are both expected to take the stand to answer questions on those allegations.

This is a very important inquiry because South Africans will begin to hear from these key witnessed the exact details of these allegations.

Of course, this is a mammoth task and the actual hearings might not even start today. Some people are still going to be summoned to the hearing and I believe former President Jacob Zuma has also received an invite to come and give his side of the story.

This involves the dodgy relationship between him and the Gupta family and that he broke his own oath of office.

At this moment it is not clear whether Zuma has accepted the invite, says Kubheka.
