Each year people in rich countries waste about as much food (222 million tonnes) as the entire sub-Saharan Africa produces in a year (230 million), according to the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations.
We waste a third of the world’s entire food production for human consumption every year.
If we avoid 25% of that wastage, it could feed 870 million hungry mouths.
