Woman swims in shark-infested water to raise awareness of ocean pollution

Cape-based physiotherapist and devoted swimmer, Sarah Ferguson has swum 100km over six days, in shark-infested icy waters to raise awareness around the effect of plastic in our oceans.

Ferguson swam from Ponta Dobela in Mozambique to Sodwana Bay in KwaZulu-Natal last month.

The feat was filmed for a seven-part documentary series, 'Breathe Conservation'

Speaks to CapeTalk's Kieno Kammies about her adventure.

For me it's about being a voice for the marine life that can't speak for itself and allowing future generations to experience the marine life that I had to share in our waters.

It's a privilege that I had to share the ocean with sharks and whales and they are an essential for our ecosystem

My biggest message is trying to change behaviour and trying to make people aware of the impact of their daily choices like using a plastic straw. These things are not necessary, we use them once and we throw them away. When you throw it away it never goes away because it doesn't disintegrate
