WCED: It's the police's duty to keep schools safe from crime

Safety of teachers and learners has become a major issue, as gangs in the communities where the schools are situated continue to terrorise them right inside the school's premises.

MEC for Education in Western Cape Debbie Schäfer says most of the issues that affect the schools are crime related and according to SA's Constitution, it is the police mandate to deal with crime.

She says she understands that they need to do everything in their power to keep their staff and leaners safe while they are at school but the police need to do their part in dealing with criminal elements.

People keep on holding the education department responsible and saying what are we doing about that but nobody is asking the police what are they doing about it.

Debbie Schäfer, Western Cape Education MEC

People want us to pay for security and we can't do that. We have to pay our teachers and pay for our buildings to make sure that our school buildings are safe as we can. We don't have money to keep on paying for a mandate that is not ours.

Debbie Schäfer, Western Cape Education MEC

If they want us to do policing, then change the Constitution, give us the mandate and a budget and I will happily manage the police.

Debbie Schäfer, Western Cape Education MEC

Schafer says the department is doing everything in its power to deal with socio-economic issues that are affecting these learners on a daily basis.
