He spoke about his personal habits of success, his upbringing, his identity, passion projects and people’s perceptions of him.

Business maverick and acclaimed public speaker Vusi Thembekwayo has written a new book which details his rise from the township of Wattville to being a millionaire venture capitalist with the world at his feet.

The new book is titled Vusi – Business and life Lessons from a Black Dragon.

Thembekwayo joined CapeTalk presenter Pippa Hudson to discuss the book and his life story ahead of his launch at Exclusive Books in the V&A Waterfront on Wednesday 22 August.

He spoke about his personal habits of success, his upbringing, his identity, passion projects and people’s perceptions of him.

When people look at me, they have an idea of who I am.

Vusi Thembekwayo, author, venture capitalist and public speaker

In part, I am to blame for that because I've had a facade about how I live my life for the longest time and there are parts of my life I don't expose - I'm very private.

Vusi Thembekwayo, author, venture capitalist and public speaker

People only have a specific view, they don't see the full view.

Vusi Thembekwayo, author, venture capitalist and public speaker

Nobody knows that just this year I lost R4 million building my business. As businesspeople, nobody talks about their failures.

Vusi Thembekwayo, author, venture capitalist and public speaker

We live in this era where you've got to be seen as successful and doing amazing stuff, and when you're failing you don't tell people.

Vusi Thembekwayo, author, venture capitalist and public speaker

The truth is, I fail a lot more than I succeed.

Vusi Thembekwayo, author, venture capitalist and public speaker

I slept in the parking lot [in my car] for seven months in the dead of winter.
