Trump using 'swart gevaar' to undermine ANC's progressive efforts - Zizi Kodwa

ANC spokesperson Zizi Kodwa says US President Donald Trump is using fear tactics to undermine the land reform efforts in South Africa.

On Wednesday, Trump tweeted that he had asked Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to “closely study the South Africa land and farm seizures” and the apparent 'large-scale' killing of farmers.

Kodwa says this is an example of using 'swart gevaar' (the black danger) to undermine the progress being made to address apartheid's legacy of inequality.

He says that Trump has been very reckless with his comments, despite the major political and economic influence he wields.

According to Kodwa, local organisations such as lobby group AfriForum are also to blame for creating false perceptions around farm murder by using exaggerated terms such as 'ethnic cleansing'

He maintains that the ANC will continue to work towards correcting the historical legacy of inequality to make South Africa more inclusive.

Donald Trump is part of a right-wing fear factor. He uses 'swart gevaar' to undermine the progress we are making in the country in terms of addressing the historical legacy of inequality.

We will continue to address inequality in South Africa in terms of ownership of the land.

I think Trump sees South Africa as a Continent. I don't think he understands. I doubt he does any research before he says anything.

Trump has no interest in the poor or developing countries.

Meanwhile, international relations expert Prof John Stremlau says Trump's tweet is an inflammatory distraction from the fraud cases implicating his former campaigners.

He adds that Trump would have quietly instructed his diplomats to investigate if he was genuinely concerned.
