Solutionist Thinking: In Conversation with Sherylle Calder

Solutionist Thinking with RMB is a thirteen-episode podcast series hosted by Bruce Whitfield focusing on the great South African minds who are thinking differently and going against the norm. In the eleventh episode, Whitfield speaks with leading sport scientist and performance coach, Sherylle Calder.

There's nothing paranormal about Dr. Sherylle Calder, unless you consider the fact that she has the ability to see things coming before it happens...

I believe, you can train to see things quicker, and the quicker you see it, the faster you can make a decision and, the more time you have to make a decision.

Fast forward to her childhood.

Growing up in Bloemfontein, Calder didn't consider herself much different from the other children – well, aside from the fact that she could do things better than most children, she was a young girl who just loved sport.

Her yearning to represent South Africa led her to do just that – about fifty times over before she became a top sport scientist and go-to performance coach to the world's most elite athletes.

If you pick up something early, it gives you more time to respond.

"She has something that her competitors didn't have, she saw things differently," says Bruce Whitfield of Calder, the woman CNN referred to as a "visionary, a pioneer".

If you take information in more effectively and you process it better, you come to a better decision.

While most fields have some sort of research basis on which scientists build but, because Calder's field, visual recognition was unresearched she approached Sports Science Institute of South Africa's Professor Tim Noakes to learn how to compile an academic study. They didn't know it then, – but the result would be absolutely staggering.

If your eyes and brain, giving back information works more effectively, you do things in a shorter time and, you do them better - it makes sense you're just more productive.

Her research led her to develop EyeGym, an online Visual Intelligence Training program that unlocks your potential to make faster, smarter decisions.

Whenever I learn something new, I apply that into the software program, into the science.

Today, the program consists of Calder's learnings from 30 years of research, training and science as well as an extensive database with information from over 100 000 elite athletes.
