Various organisations and people from around the world have shown an outpouring of love and support towards the two young boys who walked four hours to get medical treatment for their community dog, with just R7 in their pockets.
The brothers, aged 8 and 14, and their family recently lost everything when their home burned down.
Gerry had no shoes, and they were scraping together every cent to try and buy him a new pair.
They’d managed to save up all of R7 when they noticed that Meisie was looking sick and was refusing her food.
So the brothers decided to take that R7 and find a vet to help her, one of them walking barefoot throughout the journey.
The Animal Welfare Shelter in Philippi treated the dog named Meisie pro bono, and also found some shoes for Gerry.

Animal Welfare’s Allan Perrins says the boys have been richly rewarded with an overwhelming amount of donations and aid.
Some of the offers and assistance they've received so far:
- A trip to the Two Oceans Aquarium by Two Oceans Aquarium
- Two brand new BMX bicycles from The Pedal Power Association
- Two Junior Animal Welfare Ambassador outfits from the Animal Welfare Shelter
- offers to help repair the fire damage to their family home
- a mountain of shoes, food donations, clothing, bedding and furniture
- offers to cover their school tuition fees
- offers to buy them sorely needed fire-extinguishers
- offers to buy them shopping vouchers
- heaps of pet food for the dog, Meisie
- a number of cash donation offers from across SA and even abroad
So much has been donated that everyone on the farm has benefitted in some way or another from the boys kind deed, Perrins explains.
Meisie is doing very well, she's made a remarkable recovery. We expect to return her to the community and family within the next two to three weeks.
