Zondo Commission: There are some discrepancies in Vytjie Mentor's testimony

The third witness at the Zondo Commission of Inquiry, Vytjie Mentor has been testifying making many allegations with regards to state capture.

Sunday Times political reporter Qaanitah Hunter says Mentor has been talking about her trip to China which was organised by the Guptas.

She says former president Jacob Zuma was also on that trip and asked to meet with her, which she refused because Zuma has a reputation with women and she says she didn't want to meet with him in a foreign country.

The commission heard this morning how Mentor went on this trip which was paid for by Transnet when she was Parliment's head of portfolio committee in Public Enterprise. She detailed on how she was met by Duduzane Zuma on the flight to China and meeting people of Indian origin which she realised later that it was the Guptas.

She makes very damning accusations that the Gupta brothers were in charge of this high-level diplomatic mission.

She details how one of the Gupta brothers called her to the hotel and explained that he wanted to take her to Jacob Zuma. However, she refused because she had been unsuccessfully trying to meet the president in South and now she was concerned for her safety meeting him in a foreign country.

Hunter says Mentor appeared to be nervous as she was giving her testimony and there were discrepancies. In her book, Mentor says that she was met with Brian Hlongwa but in her testimony, she says that she met with Fana Hlongwane.

Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo said that people need to be specific in their testimonies because any contradictions, even in error, will give grounds to implicated parties to apply for cross-examination, reports Hunter.

She says the Hawks lawyer, representing the major-general that was implicated last week by Mcebisi Jonas, has applied to cross-examine.

To apply for leave to examine you will have to present a sworn statement that absolutely contradicts what the witness said.
