Stats SA reveals most popular baby names

Statistics South Africa announced South Africa’s most popular baby name for 2017 garnered from the country’s birth rates.

In 2017, the most popular first names for girls were Enzokuhle (“Do good” in isiZulu), Melokuhle (“Stand up for good” in isiZulu) then Amahle (“Beautiful” in isiZulu).

The most common middle names were Precious, Princess, and Angel.

The most popular first name for boys was Enzokuhle (“Do good” in isiZulu) , Lethabo (“Happiness” in seSotho, sePedi and seTswana) and Melokuhle (“Stand up for good” in isiZulu).

Most common boys' middle names were Junior, Blessing and Gift.

Provincially, Liam is the most popular boys name in the Western Cape, while Mia is most popular with girls.

Luthando is the most popular Gauteng boys name and Lethabo for girls.
