Black-owned (and managed) Newzroom Afrika to air on DStv from early 2019

Newzroom Afrika owners Thokozane Nkosi (L) and Thobile Ngwato (R).

MultiChoice has announced Newzroom Afrika as a replacement 24-hour news channel, after cancelling Mzwanele Manyi’s Afro Worldview earlier this month.

Newzroom Afrika – formed by TV production entrepreneurs Thabile Ngwato and Thokozani Nkosi - will air on channel 405 from early 2019.

More than 100 bidders expressed interest.

Joe Thloloe and Dinesh Balliah will head up an editorial ethics oversight board at Newzroom Afrika.

The broadcast operations will have television executive Zanele Mthembu at the helm.

The newsroom will fall under journalist Malebo Phage.

The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield interviewed MultiChoice CEO Calvo Mawela.

Listen to the interview in the audio below (and/or scroll down for quotes from it).

They stood out with their creative approach… You need an entrepreneurial spirit… They came up with a concept that is digital in nature… They’re young, dynamic people…

Calvo Mawela, MultiChoice

These are people who have been in newsrooms for some time throughout their careers… they know the TV business inside out…

Calvo Mawela, MultiChoice

Where they need us to assist, we’ll offer support, barring any editorial decisions…

Calvo Mawela, MultiChoice

We will keep them true to their word… in order to make sure we don’t make the same mistake as in the past.

Calvo Mawela, MultiChoice
