Western Cape Education MEC Debbie Schäfer says it is ridiculous that learners cannot walk to and from school without becoming victims of crime.
Schafer's comments follow an incident in which a Grade 9 learner was abducted from a school in the Southern Suburbs last week.
The learner says men driving around in a white BMW forced her into the car, kept her captive for several hours and sexually assaulted her.
We now need a plan from the police... this is crazy that we have people who cannot simply walk the streets without becoming victims of crime, we need answers.— Debbie Schäfer, Western Cape Education MEC
Schafer says she has met with the police and they are conducting investigations on the case as a matter of urgency.
She says they have also communicated with parents in terms of measures they can take to keep children safe.
We have, as the Education Department, sent out a circular to the schools just informing them that they need to be more aware and heightening the processes and security mechanisms.— Debbie Schäfer, Western Cape Education MEC
