Children abductions
A 9-year-old was killed and dumped at a dumping site in Bloekombos in the Western Cape days and a pupil was abducted.

Dr Sebastian Van As, Head of Trauma at Red Cross Children's Hospital says children between ages 1-18 die from trauma-related injuries than diseases.

Van As statement comes after a 9-year-old was killed and dumped at a dumping site in Bloekombos.

This comes just days after Education MEC, Debbie Schafer, confirmed that a school pupil was abducted and allegedly sexually assaulted while returning from school.

We all know that South Africa is a very violent country and very lawless. Of course, if there is a lot of violence in the country, where 40% of the population are children, of course, children are going to be involved in that violence.

Dr Sebastian Van As, Head of Trauma at Red Cross Children's Hospital

Children are rarely the perpetrators of violence, it is always adults. Children are at the receiving end of it.

Van As says road traffic crashes are the biggest killer of children in South Africa. He advises that every motorist should be thinking of children while driving and slow down.

If you are driving 60km/h and you hit a child that child is dead but at 20km/h you will have time to break and the child will survive.

Dr Sebastian Van As, Head of Trauma at Red Cross Children's Hospital

At the Red Cross Children's Hospital trauma unit, they see between 1-200 children who are ejected from the car because they were not strapped in, says Van As.

He says parents should know that by law children should wear seatbelts.

And yet research indicates that 90% of parents and caretakers don't strap in children. this a tragedy because the car doesn't even have to be in a crash, if you hit the breaks the child will go through the windscreen with their head.
