Panyaza Lesufi apologises to Parktown Boys pupils

MEC for Gauteng Department of Basic Education, Panyaza Lesufi has apologised to the pupils of Parktown Boys saying that government has failed them.

Speaking to CapeTalk's Kieno Kammies, Lesufi says the first report into allegations of sexual assaults at the school did not reveal much and parents were not happy with these outcomes, which led to the second investigation.

The second report implicated three more teachers in allegations of sexual assault and racism.

We can't be proud as a department when we are receiving accolades for doing good things but when bad things come we want to point fingers somewhere.

Panyaza Lesufi, MEC for Gauteng Department of Basic Education

The reality is that we have failed these children. They were under our watch and under our protection.

Former assistant water polo coach at Parktown Boys, Collan Rex, pleaded guilty to 123 counts of sexual assault, says Lesufi.

He says this means that these children went through pain and as a department, they have to accept blame.

The buck stops with me. I am the head of the institution, I am responsible for education and I'm saying to the society we are sorry.

Panyaza Lesufi, MEC for Gauteng Department of Basic Education

Lesufi says they will do everything in their power to rectify the situation.
