[LISTEN] ANC concerned over Solidarity's Sasol strike, says it's far-fetched

The African National Congress (ANC) says while members of Solidarity at Sasol in Secunda Mpumalanga have the right to strike, the issue does not require what it says is 'far-fetched action' on their part.

READ: White employees at Sasol to strike for inclusion in new share scheme

Members are plan to embark on a go-slow this week over Sasol's decision to exclude its white employees from its new staff share scheme "Khanyisa".

According to the union, the share scheme will not award white employees with 30 years of service while those who have been with the company for only three months will receive a share value of R500,000.

ANC communicator Phelisa Nkomo says the party supports Sasol's decision.

The African National Congress support the decision taken by Sasol because we are of the view that the issue of economic transformation ensuring that working class people actually have a stake in the economy is long overdue.

Phelisa Nkomo, ANC communicator

There is nothing wrong with Solidarity pursuing a strike but we think that because of the nature of the matter they are striking for, we think there are embedded racial issues, we don't think that this matter requires so much far-fetched action on their part instead of engaging Sasol management...

Phelisa Nkomo, ANC communicator

The ANC believes that the steps that Sasol has taken is actually in a good direction, we are just calling on Solidarity to engage openly with Sasol management instead of having to take a far-fetched decision of striking and threatening to switch off the plant.
