SA Human Rights Commission to hold inquiry into Vaal river pollution

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) plans to hold an inquiry into the contamination of the Vaal River.

This comes after listeners and other stakeholders in the Vaal complained about how pollution in the river has reached crisis proportions

There have been complaints about pump stations which are not operating and poor water treatment plans which have resulted in sewage spilling into the Vaal River.

On Monday the South African Human Rights Commission conducted an inspection of the Vaal River.

Speaking to Bongani Bingwa, Gauteng Provincial Manager of the SAHRC Buang Jones says what they saw on Monday confirmed what residents were saying about sewage spillage into the Vaal river.

Some of the key concerns are that the pollution emanates from wastewater works which have been poorly managed by the Emfuleni Municipality.

He adds that the pollution also emanates from industry, from a nearby Sasol plant.
