[LISTEN] Why it's important to test your baby's hearing at birth

A local hearing organisation aims to empower families through early interventions at home to be able to detect if their babies have hearing loss.

Azania Mosaka speaks to Hi Hopes audiologist Dr Selvarani Moddley to find out how you can make informed choices based on your child's hearing loss.

Moddley explains some of the work the organisation does.

We send trained interventionists from local communities into the homes of families, teaching them about their communication options and how to actually raise this child, to make sure the child develops....

Moddley shares the importance of testing your baby's hearing at birth, what the test entails, how long it takes and how to cope if your baby has some level of hearing loss.

From a couple of months, children develop different milestones of language and that is what parents need to know about. By nine months they should be babbling and saying those initial precursors to words....if parents are at all concerned, they need to see an audiologist as soon as they can.

What can be done, as soon as children are born, once the ear is clear of fluid, there is an OAE test that can be done, an otoacoustic emission.

Because hearing is the way we develop language - it is the basis for development of socio-emotional skills, cognitive skills and then later literacy and academic skills, language does not have to be just speaking, it can be a sign language - once a child is identified with hearing loss, it is giving that child access to language.
