Cycling enthusiast Stephen Drew has worked closely with a specialist in George to develop a prosthetic leg able to withstand the intense rigours of mountain bike competitions.
Drew was a keen mountain biker for years until he lost his right leg above the knee in a freak off-road motorbike accident in December 2016. He got back on his mountain bike after a short while.
He spoke to John Maytham about the project.
When I started cycling, there are not many prosthetic legs above knee. I wanted to do a marathon and I needed the balance.— Stephen Drew, cyclist
We wanted to do a leg specifically for cycling and it all starts with a socket on the top. When we did the leg we thought, let's test it out with the Trans Baviaans.— Stephen Drew, cyclist
