Three firefighters dead in Johannesburg building fire

Emergency Services have confirmed three firefighters have died in a blaze at the Gauteng Health Department in the Johannesburg CBD.

The fire broke out earlier on Wednesday afternoon.

One firefighter fell to his death while the others are believed to have died from smoke inhalation.

EMS spokesperson Nana Radebe says seven firefighters have been rescued from the building and transported to a nearby hospital.

We have three firefighters that have died.

The team that had gone in with them, two have been taken to hospital for shock and we could not clarify. What we know is that when they arrived on scene the whole floor had so much smoke. They did have adequate equipment. We will do investigation and find out exactly what happened.

Radebe says the fire has been contained on one floor.

Our fire safety officers are on scene to check if their equipment was working, if evacuation was opened...those are the things we will check as we do the investigation.
