Can Eskom be rescued?

This is the question raised by senior Lecturer at School of Economics and Business Science of the University of the Witwatersrand Lumkile Mondi in his latest CDE's viewpoints series.

Mondi, in the report, describes the dire state of Eskom's finances and explains the sources of the organisation’s financial distress before offering suggestions for restructuring and reform.

Speaking to John Maythan, Mondli expands on the paper.

The energy mix has changed drastically from what it was five years ago.

I'm not so sure about the search for storage facilities of energy given what other people are doing internationally.

Lumkile Mondi, Senior Lecturer at School of Economics and Business Science of the University of the Witwatersrand

Eskom, as is, is not a viable option. We have to look beyond by using renewables but also focusing on local solutions.
