Motorists and pedestrians urged to steer clear of JHB govt building after fire
MMC of Public Safety Micheal Sun says firefighters are still working to put out a deadly blaze at the Gauteng Health Department in the Johannesburg CBD.
A part of the building caught alight on Wednesday.
A group of firefighters and a staff member are being treated at the Milpark Hospital.
Sun says most of the blaze has been contained.
The fire is now contained at the one floor, the 24th floor. We uncertain what is being stored at that floor but it is causing a bit of a problem in terms of extinguishing the fire. Our firefighters are still working on the scene. We will be sure to put the fire out completely before we wrap up.Michael Sun, MMC for Public Safety
He has warned motorists and pedestrians to steer clear of the area.
Due to the extent of the damage, there are glass windows that are fragile cause of the flames. So where the building is situated on Albertina Sisulu road and Pixley Seme, inner city will be cordoned off tomorrow. We don't want any falling debris or glass panels to cause any injuries, so motorists and pedestrians please stay away from that building.Michael Sun, MMC for Public Safety
Responding to questions surrounding the safety of the building, Sun says an investigation is being conducted into the cause of the fire.
At the moment we need to conduct a very detailed inspection and investigation into the cause of the fire and the cause of the death of our firefighters.Michael Sun, MMC for Public Safety
