The Guardian app helps learners anonymously report abuse

The founder of an anonymous reporting app, The Guardian, says the app was created to give learners a voice.

Marc Hardwick is a former child protection unit police officer and is vowing to keep helping children feel safe in schools by encouraging them to break the silence.

He says in most cases, particularly in child rape cases, the victim tells someone what happened. The court usually looks for that person to ensure that the two stories correlate.

The court usually finds that the first person the victim tells also helps to keep the secret for years in honour of friendship.

Hardwick says the app will help the friend to anonymously disclose what happened to the victim and get them help.

What makes this app special is once the educator has received this report, has the ability to go back to learner but never gets to know the identity of the learner and ask more questions.

The app is also created in such a way that if a learner has a video or a photograph of what they saw, they could capture that and send it to whoever is going to investigate.

The app is aimed at high school learners and will cost participating schools a once-off R1 250 and then R500 a month afterwards.
