DA says there aren't enough resources to fix faulty govt buildings in JHB

DA Gauteng Spokesperson on Infrastructure Development Alan Fuchs says there are not enough resources to fix several local government owned buildings that may pose a safety hazard.

There have been questions surrounding the safety of state-run buildings after a deadly fire at the Bank of Lisbon building which houses the Departments of Health, Human Settlements and Cogta.

Speaking to Ray White on The Midday Report, Fuchs explains how a long-delayed project to develop government offices in the Johannesburg CBD has made the prospects of refurbishing the buildings even more costly.

The reality is there are not enough resources, either human or financial.

18 buildings that were bought by the provincial government prior to 2003, they were going to upgrade and refurbish these buildings and use them as accommodation for the officials of the provincial government. 15 years later and that project has come to a standstill.

Alan Fuchs, DA Gauteng Spokesperson on Infrastructure Development

In 2005 it was proposed that it would cost R2.5 billion, the latest figures we have seen suggest those costs have escalated to R7.5 billion...the project has been stalled and Treasury has now indicated there is an affordability issue which has to be reconsidered.
