Former Chairperson of the IEC, Dr. Brigalia Bam shares stories of her upbringing & chats about the influential people in her life

In a profile interview, author and former Chairperson of the IEC (Electoral Commission of South Africa) Dr. Brigalia Bam, shares some stories of her upbringing, and tells #WeekendBreakfast host Phemelo Motene about the male figures in her life, and the influential role they played.

Dr. Bam says that she retired a long time ago.

I no longer have jobs that make me anxious she adds.

I try to manage the things I like doing.... But at times, you get too anxious about your free time, and getting bored, and getting depressed.

Dr. Bam says that the Electoral Commission of South Africa started in 1997, but she became the Chairperson in 1999.

I'm working with a historian, who suggested that I do a family biography she adds.

Dr. Bam says that they are working on something exciting, but mentions that challenges that come with tracking down your families history.

I don't have access to my family archives adds Dr. Bam.

She says that regardless of the challenges, she discovered some interesting things about her family.

My grandfather was one of the biggest influences says Dr. Bam.

My father is what I would call a typical father of those days. They are so busy in their professions and were not too much around their girls.

Dr. Bam recalls how her father and grandfather would hoard the newspapers.

You dare not take those newspapers away she jokingly adds.
