NPA gives reasons why there are unsolved corruption cases

As far back as 2009, the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) provided the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) with a report detailing how Bosasa, now operating as African Global Operations, bribed former prisons' boss Linda Mti and the department's chief financial officer Patrick Gillingham to secure lucrative tenders.

The City Press on Sunday reported that members of the Cabinet received security upgrades to their respective homes as favours from the facilities management companies.

Speaking to Africa Melane, standing in for Bongani Bingwa, spokesperson of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Luvuyo Mfaku says they have indicated that prosecutors are awaiting a forensic report from the Hawks.

The Hawks have commissioned a private investigation company to compile that report. When that report is finalised, then we will be in a position to make a decision as far as the matter is concerned.

Luvuyo Mfaku, NPA spokesperson

He adds that they will only be in a position to pronounce who is being prosecuted once the investigations are complete and at this stage they cannot do that.

He adds that their sole mandate is to conduct criminal prosecutions and not criminal investigations.

When an investigation is not completed we cannot make a decision on whether to prosecute or not.

Luvuyo Mfaku, NPA spokesperson

Melane also spoke to forensic investigator Paul O' Sullivan who says they issued a report in December 2016.

Where we stated categorically and we repeated that in June 2017, we stated that both the NPI that the DDCI were captured and when we say captured we mean that is was captured by the underworld.

So you have a situation where certain types of dockets where not being brought forward.

Paul O' Sullivan, Forensic Investigator

He says the types of dockets they are talking about were dockets relating to corruption of those near and dear to former president Jacob Zuma.
