ANC must come clean on allegations to oust Ramaphosa - ST political reporter

The ANC has strongly refuted the claims that the party is trying to oust President Cyril Ramaphosa.

According to the Sunday Times, there was a private meeting attended by former President Jacob Zuma and ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule which was held at a Durban beachfront hotel on Thursday, allegedly discussing plans to unseat President Ramaphosa.

The ANC rubbished these reports as "shameless political gossip" and asked the Sunday Times to retract the article.

Sunday Times reporter Quaanitah Hunter says she doesn't understand why the ANC is responding to these allegations because this has nothing to do with the party - the meeting was held outside the party's jurisdiction.

She says if the ANC wants to get involved, they should ask these leaders of their whereabouts on the day they were seen leaving the hotel in Durban.

If Pule Mabe was issuing a statement on behalf of Ace Magashule as a human being then we can understand that but I would not understand why the party would rubbish something that was not part of its formal meeting.

If they are refuting the story then they need to ask one simple question, were they in the meeting or not, and the statement doesn't speak to that.

Hunter says those who attended the meeting refused that they were part of the meeting even though the Sunday Times reporter saw them.

She says this was not the first time that Zuma met with his supporters within the ANC in a secretive meeting.

Other senior party officials have admitted that they've been hearing about these meetings and they are concerned.

Hunter says the same way they found out about the meeting between Mcebisi Jonas and the Guptas is the same way they found out what was going on in the meeting.

The ANC needs to answer what was the purpose of the meeting and why were they lying about the meeting taking place

Qaanitah Hunter, Sunday Times political reporter

We have spoken to numerous people within the ANC saying that they have received information that there has been a fightback strategy and we then went to investigate it.
