13 cases of child abductions and attempted kidnappings reported in the WC
EWN reporter Lauren Isaacs says they've been at least 13 cases of child abductions and attempted kidnappings in communities across the Western Cape since 8 August.
She says in three of the thirteen incidents at least three learners were sexually assaulted.
She adds that the modus operandi is somewhat similar in all the cases, the target being female learners who are travelling to or from school. It is still not clear whether all these cases are linked or being coordinated by the same group of people.
Just a few minutes ago I received a message from the education MEC spokesperson Jessica Shelver saying that she received reports of six incidents.Lauren Isaacs, EWN reporter
I realised that in most of these cases, kids have spotted cars parked on the side of the road taking pictures of these kids.Lauren Isaacs, EWN reporter
Speaking to CapeTalk's Kieno Kammies Shelver says they have sent out a notice for schools to be vigilant of these cars that are taking pictures of leaners.
She says the department tried to get an urgent meeting with the police to know what the plan is around these issues but the police were unavailable.
She says they still don't know how the police will be handling these matters.
We need to ascertain from them if any of these incidents are linked, whether there is a pattern that exists so that we can assist them in trying to prevent these incidents from happening.Lauren Isaacs, EWN reporter
