Journo and author Rebecca Davis talks about her journey to sobriety and her experimentation with self-improvement in her new book.

Journalist, commentator and author Rebecca Davis has penned a witty new book about some of her journeys to try and find the meaning of life.

The book, titled Self-Helpless: A Cynic's Search for Sanity, is a hilarious account of her sobriety and the curious path to personal wellness.

Self-Helpless follows her debut book, Best White and Other Anxious Delusions, which was published in 2015.

Davis says quitting alcohol has reduced her tolerance for drunk people and long social interactions.

She delves into her year-long experience of immersing herself in the worlds of auras, chakra cleansing, sweat lodges, sangomas, magic mushrooms, minimalism, digital detoxing, mindfulness, fasting, and more.

It's a daunting thing to bring out a second book.

Rebecca Davis, journalist and author

You have very little appetite for sitting around chatting for six hours, but you do have to fill the time.

There's a terrible shortage of non-alcoholic drink options for adults, which I really regret because I end up ordering coffee now at all times of night because I don't want to drink Fanta.

For a while, you do play that game where you're sitting around with a Red Bull in a tumbler hoping everyone thinks its single malt or whatever.

Rebecca Davis, journalist and author

As a non-drinker, I've become hyper-vigilant about how much people drink which makes me a lot of fun to be around.

I suppose tapping into cynicism is its own wellspring of humour.

I was so disappointed with my sangoma experience because as 'a best white' I so desperately wanted it to be this kind of transformative outing for me.

Davis and Eusebius McKaiser read excerpts from the book and discussed some of the themes explored in her chapters.
